Brief Summary

KWASIZABANTU MINISTERS’ CONFERENCE – 2001

REV FRIEDEL STEGEN

“OUR CALLING AS PREACHERS”

JEREMIAH 2:13

There are so many opportunities to win souls for the Lord.   May we have an ear to hear what the Lord says and be effective in winning souls.  Two examples of that:

Example 1:

William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was approached by the prison authorities concerning a criminal in prison who was serving a 15 years sentence.   Nobody had been able to help him and the time of his release was close at hand.  Booth prayed about it and then felt led to go to him on the day of his release and invite him to his home for a meal.  The man did not come at lunch time but Booth asked his wife to prepare a supper as for a king.  The man arrived for supper and afterwards Booth invited him to stay for the night.  The next morning at breakfast table, Booth's small daughter of 5 years old came and sat ons his lap.  Booth whispered something into her ear and she slipped off his lap and went to the criminal, stretching out her arms to him and gave him a kiss on his cheek.  That caused the hardened criminal to break down, he wept and gave his life to the Lord.

Example 2:

As a boy, president George Washington went to school with Peter Miller and Michael Whitman.

After they left school, Peter Miller became a preacher in a town 112 kilometres away from Washington.  Michael Whitman hated the Gospel and started hating Peter as well.  He persecuted him and did everything in his power to bring him to naught:  he broke into his house, was very destructive and eventually stole and destroyed things all over the village, and then committed a murder.  As a result he was condemned to death.

When Miller heard about that, he walked the 112 kilometres to Washington by foot and asked to see the president.  He pleaded with the president to release Michael Whitman.

The President said: “I cannot do this for your friend, Peter”.

Miller replied: “He is not my friend, but he’s become my worst enemy who tried to destroy me”, and related Michael’s whole life to him. The President responded in a soft voice: “As friend of yours I would not be able to help you, but because he is your enemy, I will set him free”. Michael became a true Christian.

There are things we can go and do when we go home. Peter lived according to: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, do good to those who treat you badly”.

Jeremiah 2:13

God directed these words at His people, those of whom we read in v.2. God reminds us of the time He took us out of Egypt, when we first met Him.

v.3: They were precious to Him and He was jealous for them – He intervened whenever they were touched.

v.8: But something happened somewhere along the line: they forsook God and even the priests didn’t ask anymore: “Where is the Lord?” – they were not dependant on God but could do things in their own way.

v.9: The result. God will do that, so that they will come to their senses.

v.13: Am I still drinking living water?  Or have I become guilty of hewing my own cistern, broken and cracked? The danger is there that we are blessed, but we pour that water into the cistern of our way of thinking and our tradition, our way of understanding, our own convictions, the way I am used to, was taught.
