Avocados

One of the many projects to raise money to finance the mission, is the Avocado Pear Project. A few hundred trees are almost 15 years old but 90% of  the others are younger trees. There are a variety of export quality avocado trees, including: Fuerte, Edranol, Ryan and Hess.

Reaping season is from the middle July through to the end of August. Last year a number of containers were exported to England and this year about 3 times that amount will be sent, the Lord willing.

A special building for avocado packing has been erected and is now (since middle July 2000) in operation. This building will contain a special machine to wash, wax and sort the avocados.
Besides the packing for Kwasizabantu the shed is also catering for local farmers who do not have professional packaging equipment.

Update, 19 September 2000: Besides packing for other local avocado farmers the packing shed has filled 10 containers for export. The lesser quality avocados have been sold on local markets.
