Sunday 1 December 2002 - "Say, the Lord has need of her" - Funeral of Mrs Kay Stegen

(This very special service was the funeral of Mrs Kay Stegen, wife of Erlo Stegen. This brief summary hardly does justice to the mighty victory of her life and death. Many thousands attended the funeral including friends from the department of education (who have worked closely with the school where Aunty Kay (as she was affectionately known) had been the principal, and members of the Zulu royal family, the local mayor and many of the amakhosi (chiefs). Many tributes were made including a moving personal tribute by Dr M.G. Buthelezi, the minister of Home Affairs. Rev Erlo Stegen received strength from the Lord to preach with great authority. His leg was in plaster of paris because of a recent foot operation. He went to the pulpit with crutches and preached on a stool.

Sunday 1 December 2002 - "Say, the Lord has need of her"

(Summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen)

Mark 11: 1-3

Who are we to ask questions from God when He has declared that we should simply say: "The Lord has need of it", and, "Your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven". God is almighty and sovereign, He can do as He wishes. We give Him all the praise for that.

I was reminded of the time of our engagement when I sent her a message of proposal, adding, "on this condition that the Lord is first, His work second and you third in my life". She was truly a wonderful wife, like the one described in Prov 31.

Like her life was for God, His work and serving others, even in her dying moments her worry was not over herself, but those left behind. When a certain doctor asked her if she was afraid to die, she answered, "No, not at all". There was a burden on her heart, however, her husband and children that are left behind. God comforted her even in that and she had the assurance that God will care for them. So too our whole family experienced God's comfort in an amazing way together with her.

As her last moments on earth came close, she whispered excitedly, "The King is coming", and then she repeated it louder and louder. Finally, her last words were, "He's come", before she became unconscious and passed away later that day. In Eph 5:25 and onwards we read how husbands ought to sanctify their wives.

Make sure that He is coming to fetch you too, and do not live in a fool's paradise, until it is too late.
