Sunday 25 November 2001 - God's way to success

Wedding of Jan & Gwen

(Summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen)

Mt 6:33

As message for the wedding ceremony which took place during the morning service, Rev Erlo Stegen read from Matthew 6:33  -  "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness;  and all these things shall be added unto you."

This verse contains a Godly mystery, namely that success is obtained by putting God first.  The truth of this verse is illustrated by the following examples:

1.  Some years ago a Frenchman went to America to find out why the American economy seems to always flourish.  After investigating the matter thoroughly, he came to the conclusion that their secret was religion.  That came as a shock to him, because he had been taught before that one cannot combine Christianity with business.

2.  In 1917 during the revolution in Russia the words "We will plough and reap without God" were written on their huge tractors, but it did not take 70 years and the country was so to say without bread.

After the second World War a German rocket expert went to America and built the first American sputnik.  As a child he had given his life to God but at university he forgot about Him.  Later in life he had a meeting with the Lord Jesus and then went from university to university in America testifying about God.  The students were amazed that a clever mathematician believed in God  - something which could not be proven on paper.  He just smiled at them and said:  "Do you want me to light a candle to see the sun?"

The first and most important for us is to seek God and His righteousness.  There is no good future without God.  The one who misses this, will never be successful.  And even if one is successful in your business life but not in your relationship with God, one is living only half a life.

Harry Oppenheimer set a good example of this:  Once while addressing some business people in Johannesburg, he said that his business was especially successful that year, but that he was asking himself how he was faring spiritually.

What it means to seek God:  Striving for His Kingdom with undivided diligence and perseverance.  God must rule and run our lives.

Nothing else may be first in our lives but God.  Then the Bible tells us that we need not worry about anything else (food, clothing or our future)  -  God will add that to us.  Get the centre right, put God in His rightful place, and He will take care of the circumference.  As an earthly father cares for his children, so our heavenly Father will care for us.  If we who are evil, can care for our children, how much more won't our heavenly Father do that for His children.  We need to leave all worries over to God, also about our future.  Luther said that we must work and leave the worries over to God.

Let us put the Lord Jesus in the centre of our lives.  If we serve God in this way with an undivided heart, we will be a blessing to others.
