(Summary of sermon by Rev Erlo Stegen)
A strange Christmas text it may appear, but we find in Col 1:
27: "...the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is
Christ in you, the hope of glory."
The wise men from the East understood this mystery of revelation as
they sought the King which had been born. They followed the Divine revelation in the stars
but unfortunately, their intellect took control and revelation was lost as they decided
that the King must have been born in Jerusalem. Little did they know that this disastrous
mistake was to cause blood to flow and result in the death of many children.
So too, when we follow our own minds instead of "this mystery...Christ in you"
we will not only go astray but also cause misery to others.
Consider also the state of the religious leaders who advised Herod.
They gave correct information but it was dead and useless for it had no life - it did not
draw them to go to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
An example of the mystery of Christ's birth being revealed to
mankind can be found in the story of Don Richardson and his experience with the `Peace
Child' (read more here).
