Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen
Gen 16:13
Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for
she said, "Have I also here seen Him who sees me?"
While Hagar was fleeing the angel of the Lord (as Jesus is called
in the OT) met her on the way and spoke to her and told her to humble herself and return.
Hagar responded by saying that she had seen the God that saw her. She met God in such a
personal way that she called him "The God that sees me."
She thought that she was hiding - but God had seen her all along.
She had been given to Abraham to wife by Sarah, who was barren. It was the practice in
those days that if the wife was barren, the servant may be given to wife to bear a child
for the real wife. When Hagar saw that she was with child, Satan influenced her and she
despised her mistress. Satan influenced Sarah as well and she mistreated Hagar. Hagar then
fled from her, but God met her and told her to return - then she realised that God had
seen all. She called Him, 'The God who sees me'.
Do you have a name for God, because of your meeting with Him?
Would you call him 'The God who sets free', or maybe 'The Holy God', because He has set
you free from your sins and revealed His holiness to you.
When you come to the Lord, don't only confess half of your sins -
confess it all, knowing that you are dealing with the God that sees all.
He knows all your thoughts and motives, and the intents of your heart.
