Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen

Gen 16:13

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, "Have I also here seen Him who sees me?"

Rev Stegen illustrated God's seeing us with three stories:

  • A certain boy finished matric, and he went to his uncle, expecting to receive some money for further studies. His uncle, however, first questioned him as to what he will do once he's finished his studies. He replied that he will get a good job, earn some money, marry a nice wife etc. Eventually his uncle asked him what will happen when he dies, to which he had no answer. His uncle was amazed at this - studying 'till you pass matric, and yet you do not even know what will happen after your death! Such is a miserable, foolish life.
  • A certain Christian hospital was built in a Hindu area and on the day of its opening they had prepared nice meat. Suddenly a crow came and snatched the meat away. The ceremony continued, without the meat. After a few days a lady arrived, and she related how that she is a poor widow. She cried to her gods to save her family from hunger, but still they had no food. Eventually she decided to cry to the God of the Christians. While she was praying, she heard wings flapping, and as she opened her eyes, there a crow dropped a huge piece of meat in front of her and flew away. She decided there and then to give her all to Christ and serve Him alone - He who saw her cry and heard her prayer.
  • Another boy left home to go and study at university. His mother reminded him of two things, 1) She will always be praying for him when the church bell rings, and 2) God sees him. One Sunday, 10 friends invited him to come along to a riverside where they will "enjoy" themselves. He reluctantly agreed. On their way they passed by a church as the bell was ringing for the service. His mother's words came to mind and he knew she was praying for him at that very moment. When they got to the river side, he told his friends that he was going to leave and go to church. They started to mock him and threatened to throw him in the river. He however, ignored them, threw his alcohol in the river, and walked towards the church. When he was a distance from them, he realised that their mockings have become silent and he looked back. All of them followed him to church, being touched by his courageous stand. That day all of them repented. Five became full-time servants of the Lord and the other five studied to become doctors and lawyers. All of this because of one mother who prayed for her son and taught him the fear of God who sees him always.

Rev Stegen made an altar call and approx 1000 responded.
