Is: 57:15, "For thus says the high and lofty One that
inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also
that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive
the heart of the contrite ones."
We need to realise afresh the greatness of our God. He
"inhabits" eternity; His Name is Holy. Even though He is so awesome in His
greatness and majesty he is willing to come down to the lowly. The one who humbles his
heart and has a contrite, broken spirit is noted by God who sends His grace, salvation,
life and healing.
Who dwells in your heart? Who is it who influences your heart?
We find a similar text in 2Chron 34:27, where the Lord says to
king Josiah, "because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God when
you heard His words against this place and against its inhabitants, and you humbled
yourself before Me, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard
you." King Josiah was very young and did what was right in the sight of the Lord as
his father David, yet he humbled himself greatly because of the sins of the kings that
were before him, against whom the Lord has pronounced judgement. He took God's commands
seriously and was blessed as he broke down the high places of idolatry.
Be willing to humble yourself like King Josiah. Should you not be
tender hearted the Lord promises that He will resist you and will not be with you (James
4:6). But if you are willing to humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, He will in
due time lift you up (James 4:10). If you lift yourself up you will face awful
consequences because God will make sure He brings you down. Pride brings in the influence
of satan who is only too willing to work together with those who walk in pride.
