10 May 2009 - "They overcame by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony".

Summary of sermon by Erlo Stegen

Rev 12:11 "And they conquered the accuser by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives even unto death".

I would like to briefly share my testimony of what the Lord did for me. Growing up in a family that regularly attended church I found myself with an inner longing for real Christianity. Though our family was fully involved with everything happening at our local church (our house was so close that the funerals would have the corpses at our house for viewing), I knew that there was something gravely wrong with me. I found myself doing wrong things and suffering the pangs of guilt. There seemed to be no way around this at that time. Our church minister was thoroughly educated but he too experienced that there was a deep need in his life. He searched for a living experience with God.

To this end, he asked for leave and went in search for the Lord at different places. In desperation, he ended up asking a man whom, he had heard, really "knew the Lord". As he shared with him he realized that this man of God knew far less Hebrew and Greek than he did and was beginning to wonder what this "uneducated man could teach him". Then this man asked them to pray together. They went on their knees and the man of God pleaded with the Lord to reveal Himself to our minister. The prayer was so intimate, so full of power that our minister found himself praying and begging the Lord to come into his life. The effect was immediate. His sense of assurance that Christ had forgiven him and come into his life was so real he was a changed man.

When he got into our pulpit the next Sunday we all knew that something wonderful had happened to him. That is how the Gospel came to us in a living way. I too prayed that the Lord would forgive my sins and take over my life. There was such an instant change in my life I felt that I was bursting with joy and love for God and His Word and His people. My whole focus was revolutionised. My obsession with tennis and other things was gone. I felt the Lord calling me to feed His sheep (after reading Jesus' question to Peter, in John 21: 15 to 17), and I firmly resolved to be obedient to His call. I knew that Jesus wanted me to love Him more than anything else in this world - my career, my family, my goals, everything - and, with that love burning in my heart, I began to share the Gospel among the Zulu people.

It was also with this Word we read in Matthew 1:21 that I went to the Zulu people, “call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
