2 Kings 5:19-27 - Seven steps down

The story of Naaman and Gehazi teach us seven steps down. We see how the little girl in Naaman's house was in tune with the prophet, whereas Gehazi was out of tune. This shows how that the fellowship of God's saints does not depend on distance, but on each one's relationship to the Shepherd, Jesus.

Let's look at seven steps which caused Gehazi to be disqualified to be the servant of the Lord:

  1. He forgets the privilege of being chosen of the Lord. Gehazi had the honour of being close to a man who walked with God and through whom miracles were performed. He could witness the immediate example of his master Elisha who refused the offer of wealth from Naaman, in the spirit of Jesus who said "freely you have received, freely give".
  2. He becomes double-minded. vs 20 "he said to himself" which implies that his opinion was different to Elisha's and he was not prepared to share it. It becomes an argument within himself.
  3. He runs after Naaman in stead of going to his master.
  4. Before Elisha he makes as if all is in order and pretends as if nothing has happened.
  5. Now he speaks lies in front of the man of God, and no longer only in front of the heathen.
  6. Gehazi's ignorance of God's presence and power. Vs 26 "Elisha said, did not my spirit go with you?"
  7. He has no discernment of the time and the urgency of the moment. Elisha asked him "is it a time to receive money ...?" Gehazi fails to understand what is of vital importance.

Gehazi was forced to leave the service of God. Not only was he struck with Naaman's leprosy, but even his descendents suffered.

Elisha was not hindered by Gehazi's failure, but continued to do God's work faithfully.

The Pharisees displayed the spirit of Gehazi in that they too did not discern the time of God's visitation.

When David was an old man, he prayed, in Ps 139:23&24 that the Lord would search him and try him and see if there was any offensive way in him. He had learned not to trust in his own heart, but to seek God alone for a broken heart, which is the true incense of worship.
