The scribe in our Matthew text seem to be a disciple and he offered to follow the Lord
forever and wherever he went. The Lord did not reject his offer, but showed him what the
cost was - He does not even have a place to sleep. This corresponds with Jesus' warning
that those who want to follow Him must first count the cost, lest they start off
enthusiastically, but quickly shrivel up. So too, with the second disciple, Jesus showed
that it would cost everything to follow Him. The calling of Jesus is more precious than
any other calling in this world, but it also costs everything.
But this is all by the way. The heart of the matter that I'd like to share with you is
about the Son of Man and that He is ours.
Jesus was the Son of God. Here He reveals Himself as the Son of Man. If we would only
grasp this wonderful revelation it would give us joy forever. The wise men who came from
the East offered Him gold, frankincense and myrrh. This was symbolic of His royalty, His
divinity and His future suffering and death. This Son of Man has been given to us, as the
angel proclaimed at the birth of Jesus. He belongs to us; He is our Child.
As a mother is totally focused on her baby, and everything in her life revolves around
it, much more should we be towards our Child.
The pity is that the Son of Man has 'no place to lay His head'. Perhaps you are
refusing Him place and you do not recognize that He has been given to you?
