TAS PRIZE GIVING 2001

Tabitha Adult School had their prize giving on Thursday 29 November 2001. Mrs Ndlela from Pietermaritzburg (department of education and culture) was the guest of honour.

The students performed a play of a true story to demonstrate the importance of education. A certain man, mr Mbatha, had build his own house, cultivated his field and was quite successful, but he was illiterate. And this was his downfall. One day when his children was not at home (who went to school and could read and write), he had to sign some papers, not knowing that it was his farm he was losing. Not long after that his daughter got seriously ill, and he and his wife gave her some medicine (or what they thought was medicine), which killed her. They could not read what was written on the bottle.

Years later, when he was old, he had to carry pills with him for his heart. As he one day had a pain, he tried to open the bottle, but the bottle was made "child-proof". On the lid it read "Child-proof cap - push down and twist to open". Unfortunately, because he could not read it, he could not get the bottle open, and so he died.

The function, attended by about 1,700 people, gave prizes in different categories, including Computer Studies, knitting skills and Communication skills in English.
