Message preached by Erlo Stegen on 16 April 2004 at Kaltbrunn Swizterland

`A Clear Calling‘, Text: Ez 3,16-21 and Habakuk 2,1-3

Those 2 Prophets were men who listened attentively to what God told them. In the very same way we as Christians should come in the right spirit and attitude to listen to the Word of God when it is preached. How blessed our gatherings could be, if we were prepared to receive the good seed of the word of God. Every seed needs good soil to bring fruit. We do so often enter unprepared; this results in leaving in the same way as you have come. It is like a curse in our time. People do not change, they stay the same day by day – this is not God’s normal condition. Where the soil is prepared, the result of planting will be successful.

Habakkuk – He stood firmly at his watch. Christians must be firm and sure in what decisions they take.

Every Christian is called to be Watchman, salt and light. It is not enough to accept the wword yourself, we are also responsible for conveying the message into this world to unbelievers. Habakkuk was fully aware that he was created for one purpose – to stand his watch, to stay in the will of God. Do you know why God sent you into this world? We are not only here by accident, living in this time and world – God has a plan for us.

In 1951, the Lord called me with the Word in Matthew 4,19. Since that day I have never doubted my calling. May God grant everyone a godly assurance for their calling. I do not know your longings; there is an average life but there is also another life, where people are driven by the desire to gain spiritually higher ground. As Habakkuk who set himself on the rampart. This does not symbolize a haughty life where you look down on others, but where you can listen clearly. We are commissioned to preach to gospel to all the nations, we have to pass on what God commanded us.

But how shall we preach freedom if we are in captivity? God expects more from his children than what he does from the fallen world. If you pray for guidance and wait for God to speak, listen carefully. The Lord responded to Habakuk – "Write the vision…". Where God spoke to you I recommend writing it down. Many Christians easily forget what they preached to others, promised faithfulness to God and where are they today?

Not many people read their Bibles in this era but God wants his children to be a letter read by everyone, written by the spirit of God. Let your life be a letter that can be clearly read by everyone. In 1 Cor.14: 8 it says, who will prepare for battle if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound?

Two examples:

  • A young girl worked for 6 months with a Muslim-family and for 6 months with a Christian-family. After living in the families she decided to convert to Islam. The Christian host said to her later, "If you only had told me before".
  • When Andrew Murray was accused for fanatic preaching, two elders were sent to live with him. They reported back, "He preaches not half of what he lives".

Every sinner must understand by the message of your life, that conversion and sanctification is reality. Let the people be drawn close to Jesus by your life.
