“I Will Make You…”

Matthew 4

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

The story is told of an old man who caught many fish daily. When asked what his secret was, he replied that there are three important rules in catching trout. The first is that you must hide from the fish, so they don’t see you. The second is that you must hide well and the third, to hide extremely well.

How do you become a fisher of men? You must place yourself in the hands of the Potter to form you into the person He wants you to be. Before He can form you, you must follow Him. To save others for the Lord, you yourself must be saved first.

When Jesus called Peter and John, they dropped their nets immediately, left everything at once, and followed Him. So too, we must understand who Jesus is, love and fear Him, and obey Him instantly. To be called of the Lord Jesus is no small matter. You might have dreams and hopes for your future (e.g. to become a medical doctor, etc.), but to follow Him, you’ll have to drop your own ideals and do His will. You will have to be obedient to Him in everything. To follow Him is not easy, but it is wonderful and worth all the difficulty.

Out of our own strength we cannot be fishers of men, but through His strength it is possible. We have to die to ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow Him.
