Living Faith That Speaks Through Our Lives

Scripture Reading: Daniel 6:1–27

The sermon begins with the story of a young Christian woman from South Africa who married and moved to another country. Those around her closely observed her life. At first, they assumed her exemplary conduct was temporary—that it would change once she had children or as life became more demanding. Yet even as her responsibilities increased, her Christian standard did not decline. Instead, her life reflected consistent growth and deeper devotion.

Her children also displayed the fruit of her influence. They served willingly, showed discipline, and even sought opportunities to make things right when they had done wrong. Through her example, it became clear that the Christian principles she had learned at home were deeply rooted in her life and continued to bear fruit in a new environment.

This story illustrates an important truth: genuine faith is not dependent on circumstances. What is planted deeply in the heart will naturally be revealed in everyday life.

The congregation was encouraged to read the story in Daniel 6:1-27. We start with the verses 1-4 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps, to be over the whole kingdom; and over these, three governors, of whom Daniel was one, that the satraps might give account to them, so that the king would suffer no loss. Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. Daniel lived in exile in a foreign land, yet he remained faithful to God. Because of his integrity and the “excellent spirit” within him, he distinguished himself above the other officials. Instead of learning from him, they became jealous and sought to find fault with him. When they could find none, they manipulated the king into passing a decree that would trap Daniel because of his prayer life.

Daniel did not change his faith or compromise his convictions. Even under threat of death, he continued to pray to God. His faith was not based on favourable circumstances or the support of others—it was firmly rooted in his relationship with God.

Daniel 6:13 So they answered and said before the king, “That Daniel, who is one of the captives from Judah, does not show due regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.” 14 And the king, when he heard these words, was greatly displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.... 24 And the king gave the command, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions—them, their children, and their wives; and the lions overpowered them, and broke all their bones in pieces before they ever came to the bottom of the den ....  26 I (Darius) make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

For He is the living God,
And steadfast forever;
His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed,
And His dominion shall endure to the end.
27 He delivers and rescues,
And He works signs and wonders
In heaven and on earth,
Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

When Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, God delivered him. Through this miracle, King Darius recognised the power of the living God and proclaimed that all should fear and honour the God of Daniel.

The message for believers today is clear:

  • Our faith should be demonstrated through our lives, not only through words.
  • We must remain faithful to God wherever we are—at home, school, work, or in unfamiliar environments.
  • A strong relationship with God must be built before times of difficulty arise.
  • Jealousy and pride can lead to destruction, but humility and faithfulness bring blessing.

Like Daniel, believers are called to live in such a way that others can see the reality of God through their conduct. When a life is truly surrendered to God, it influences families, communities, and even nations.

The challenge is for each person to live so faithfully that others could say: “Fear and reverence the God of [insert your name], for He is the living God who delivers and rescues.”

A life of obedience and purity may influence more people than we realise. Therefore, believers are encouraged to make firm decisions to honour God, trusting that He will use their lives to bring His light to the world.
