“Meekness”

Matthew 5

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

God’s ways are not our ways and our ways are not God’s ways. May God always have His way with us.

There are things we cannot change, and accept it or we will only hurt ourselves. When God purposes something we cannot change it.

His grace is something we cannot buy. He gives it to the sons and daughters of Living God.

Our text is an amazing promise. We Christians have South Africa in our hands. God’s word says His eyes go up and down throughout the earth to find and be strong on behalf of one person who is blameless before Him and obeys Him. Do you live and behave as such a person, that God can find you? (2Chron 16:9)

But God’s promises have a condition and our text is no exception – if we are meek we shall inherit the earth.

Do you believe that? May we Christians called by the name of Christ be filled with the meekness of Christ.

The Lord Jesus was filled with meekness to be obedient till death for you and me. (Philippians 2:1-11)

Are you and I meek so that we deny ourselves for the sake of others?

The whole earth groans and waits for the day when God will reveal the Lord Jesus as Lord and King over all.

What does meekness imply? Firstly that you’re humble and prepared to suffer wrong. Are you prepared to respect your brother and regard him higher than yourself?

The Lord Jesus humbled Himself to die for the great and small on this earth and suffer for mankind and be ridiculed even till today.

Do you have the same spirit to rather suffer wrong than to push your own way through? Are you prepared to let God have His way, that God’s will be done in your life? That you’re wiling to honour your neighbour higher than yourself and be prepared to give your life to your neighbour, and even your enemy?

Jesus became the servant of all and may that be our life.

To be meek is to be gentle. Not to be forceful and come from the top but come from below. It’s so easy to condemn people and trample on them in stead of being gentle. When someone is wounded, rather pour wine on the wound to cleanse it. That’s what the good Samaritan did with the wounded man.

To be patient is also meekness; to be soft and submissive and not to fight for your rights. To submit to the ways of the Lord.

To be modest in your dress and behaviour and submit to authority.

When Saul was to be anointed king they gathered all the nation together but they couldn’t find Saul. He was shy and hid among the stuff. He was humble at that time. Unfortunately he lost it later in his life and became proud.

It’s one of the most difficult things to submit when you know you are right.

Many despised the Lord Jesus. The pharisees wanted it their way and in stead of submitting they lost it. They spoke the truth, but didn’t live it. Jesus said whatever they say you must do but don’t do as they do.

That is the danger with us too that we know everything but don’t live it.

John 12

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

A farmer and his boy walked through a field of corn and the farmer showed his boy that the stalks which stood proud and upright had very little corn, but the ones that were bent low contained much corn.

It’s strange that we people don’t want to be told, we always want to tell others what to do. But God’s word says we must be a servant and a slave. If your master wants to humble you and even kill you He can do it and if He wants to honour you He can do it. He can do with you what He likes. A servant doesn’t have a will, what the master says must be done. And a good servant and slave does it gladly for his Master. Are you such a servant?

When you become old your life is past and you have to ask yourself whether you were meek or have you wasted your years? But God is able to restore the lost years.

May God help us to stop wasting our time to be something and strain to become something important but rather that we only live for His will and be meek.

We live in a time when things seem to be going in the opposite direction, where it seems that those that aren’t meek are inheriting the earth.

But it’s wonderful to hear from the ultimate authority who is really in control and that His word will stand.

The Lord looks to the one who follows Him in humility, that He can entrust His riches to such a person.
