Walk for Diabetes

In the week of World Diabetes Day, numerous activations took place on the mission to raise awareness about the widespread disease in South Africa. The aim was to make people aware of the subtle symptoms and grave complications, encourage them to get tested and inform them of preventative measures to lessen the risk of getting diabetes.

On Saturday afternoon, 16 November, families and friends set out on a Walk for Diabetes. Getting active is one of the ways to prevent and manage diabetes.

What a joyous occasion! Starting off on the DSS Sports field the hikers set out with enthusiasm, enjoying the fun walk along an adventurous new hiking trail. After winding their way through the valley, they were met by the Khwezi team offering each a bottle of aQuellé water. After following the trail along the edge of the sparkling dam to the half-way point, the team at the Emseni gazebo provided fruit to give them new energy. The trail plunged back into the trees and emerged at the next refreshment station – Bonlé – with Bonnie the cow mascot cheering them on and handing out drinking yoghurt. Everyone enjoyed the pleasant company and stunning scenery which includes varied bird life and flowering shrubs.

As the hikers made their way towards the finish, after covering 4.7 km, they passed through the aQuellé arch and were welcomed with a bottle of cold aQuellé ViV. Photos and fun activities – with much laugher! – at the finish brought the enjoyable afternoon to a close.
